This course is intended as an introduction to the study of biology, genetics, ecology, and evolution. Topics include a short history of biology, scientific method, basic chemistry of life, cell structure and function, photosynthesis, cell respiration, cell reproduction, genetics, evolution and ecology.

Learning Outcomes

Define basic chemistry and the chemistry of organic molecules
Integrate knowledge of cell structure and function with an understanding of the basic biological principles, including membrane structure and function
Explain metabolism and the production of energy and the function of enzymes
Define, compare and contrast photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Describe the cell cycle and its function in cellular reproduction
Explain meiosis and sexual reproduction and contrast it with cellular reproduction
Describe and illustrate Mendelian patterns of inheritance
Relate basic genetic principles to DNA structure and common patterns of inheritance
Evaluate biotechnology and genomics and assess their role in modern biology
Discuss Darwin and evolution and relate how populations evolve
Critique the theory of natural selection with respect to its relationship to evolutionary theory
Explain systematics and phylogeny
Compare and contrast viruses, bacteria, and archaea
Explain protist evolution and diversity and how it compares to fungi evolution and diversity
