This course is designed to help the student understand the identification of plants based on their scientific classification. Key plant families are studied in depth to provide a basis for identification of plants in the field. The course also covers the extensive vocabulary of botany and plant identification, as they relate to roots, stems, leaves, surfaces, inflorescences, flowers and fruits.
Identify plants in the field through characteristics of their scientific classification and divisions.
Distinguish between medicinal, edible, and poisonous plants.
Describe the anatomy and terminology of flowering plants.
Discuss the major kinds of constituents in plants.
Compare and contrast the orders of flowering plants.
Explain the roles of genetics and molecular biology in relation to plant breeding and propagation.
