This course is designed to help the student understand the identification of plants based on their scientific classification.  Key plant families are studied in depth to provide a basis for identification of plants in the filed.  The course also covers the extensive vocabulary of botany and plant identification, as they relate to roots, stems, leaves, surfaces, inflorescences, flowers and fruits. 

Learning Outcomes

Explain plant names and classification and the evolution of plants
Demonstrate learning the plants by families
Be able to profile a flower
List and define, compare and contrast the characteristics of the following plant divisions: Club moss, horsetail, fern conifer and Gnetum divisions
Compare and contrast the 42 Orders of the Dicotyledon class of flowering plants
Compare and contrast the 9 orders of the Monocotyledon class of flowering plants
Identify and discuss medicinal, edible and poisonous plants
Identify and discuss the major kinds of constituents in plants
Identify and define plant terminology by the following categories: roots, stems, surfaces, leaves, flowers and fruits.
Identify and define all the different parts, arrangements and characteristics of flowers
