Meet 2014 DETC Outstanding Graduate of the Year Shawn Hallum

Portland, Oregon— January 13, 2014—American College of Healthcare Sciences (ACHS) graduate, Shawn Hallum, has been selected as the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) 2014 Outstanding Graduate. DETC Outstanding Graduate honorees are selected for their academic record and the level and quality of their contribution to society and their chosen profession(s). The DETC conducts the “Outstanding Graduate” program annually. Award winners are featured in DETC printed publications as well as on their website (www.detc.org).

“My experience with American College of Healthcare Sciences has been consistently exceptional. Each class was expertly designed and delivered, giving me the confidence to apply information in very practical and meaningful ways. My work is inspired by my desire to work with my personal community to provide them with the information and tools they need to live longer, healthier lives,” says Hallum.

Shawn chose ACHS with the hope that having a graduate-level understanding of the various components of complementary alternative medicine would fortify his work as a spa director, enhancing his leadership of people and their individualized wellness programs. Shawn achieved his Master of Science in Complementary Alternative Medicine (MS CAM) in May 2013, graduating with a 3.95 GPA.

Shawn started his education with ACHS in 2005, completing the Certificate in Aromatherapy. Following his completion of the certificate, Shawn achieved his undergraduate degree in Business Administration and Sports Management and became a massage technician, personal trainer, and reiki practitioner. When deciding to continue his education with ACHS in 2009, Shawn was the first enrolled student in the newly launched Master of Science in Complementary Alternative Medicine program. Throughout his education at ACHS, Shawn demonstrated a focused commitment to holistic health and wellness, and leadership qualities both in the classroom and his community.

As a successful MS CAM graduate, Shawn continues to thrive as a Spa Director, leading a diverse team of individuals supporting client’s holistic health, wellness, and fitness goals. Shawn also continues to demonstrate his leadership at ACHS as an ACHS Ambassador and newly appointed member of ACHS Faculty, offering prospective and current ACHS students guidance and motivation as they reach their personal and professional holistic health and wellness goals.
