Overview

Course Description

Aroma 203 takes students to the next step in their aromatherapy training, looking deeper at the historical uses of aromatherapy and the modern scientific research being carried out in this fascinating modality. Students study methods of administration for essential oils in more depth than Aroma 101 and the anatomy and physiology of the related body systems.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe and discuss aromatherapy, including its historical basis


  • Locate, review, and discuss current research using provided online full-text reference materials and databases

  • Define valid research

  • Demonstrate ways to locate currently developing essential oil and applied research

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of a research study

  • Apply research methodology and terminology

  • Have a basic ability of how to read a research paper

  • Identify the components of a research paper and the process involved

  • Identify and discuss the anatomy and physiology of the olfactory, skin, and muscular systems, and the influence of aromatic molecules on each

  • Assess essential oil quality and be able to describe the primary production methods of essential oils

  • Discuss how essential oils interact on physical and emotional levels

  • Understand the chemistry of essential oils and the physiological effect and pathway of individual chemical components

  • Compose aromatherapy blends for therapeutic purposes, perfumery, cosmetics, and soap making

  • Use a full range of methods of administration; one module is devoted to massage

  • Locate clinical scientific studies examining the use of essential oils
