This course reviews the relevant concepts of biochemistry of macronutrients, including the structure, biological function, digestion, absorption, and metabolism of proteins, hormones, enzymes, amino acids, dietary fibers and carbohydrates, and lipids. Graduates of this course will demonstrate a strong theoretical understanding of the control mechanisms and the integration of the macronutrient metabolic pathways at the cellular and the whole-body level. Graduates will also be able to identify metabolic needs for the different stages of the lifecycle and will be able to explain how the health and the metabolic needs are affected by variations in nutrient supply, physical activity, and stress.
