Alison Loercher

Assistant Faculty

Dr. Loercher resides in Portland, Oregon. Her journey into complementary healthcare began in her early 20s when personal health challenges led her to seek alternatives beyond conventional options. Discovering solutions through Traditional Chinese Medicine, including herbs and acupuncture, she realized she had found a path she was passionate about pursuing.

Recognizing the diverse paths to health and wellness, Dr. Loercher values the importance of individualized approaches. She appreciates how ACHS provides a platform that fosters deep learning while accommodating the need for flexibility.

As a clinician practicing acupuncture and herbal medicine since 2008, Dr. Loercher’s experiences working with individuals toward their health goals have been transformative both personally and professionally. Since 2010, her work in teaching has deepened her understanding of how adults learn and adapt to new approaches, which, in turn, enhances her clinical practice by improving patient education. Additionally, owning and managing an herbal pharmacy geared toward practitioner competency and success has provided her with firsthand knowledge of what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to using herbal medicine effectively.

Dr. Loercher has an extensive background in course development, herbal pharmacy management, research proficiency, and clinical herbal medicine. She recently published a case study on the use of herbal medicine and acupuncture for an individual with burning mouth syndrome, a rare and multifactorial condition that primarily affects postmenopausal women.

Professionally, Dr. Loercher is most proud of founding and managing The Vital Compass, a cooperative herbal medicinary in Portland, OR, which served the community for a decade before closing in 2024. On a personal level, she finds joy and fulfillment in spending time with her young child and sharing with him the many wonders of the world around them.

“Our relationships with each other and with the plants around us offer an ever-expanding way to understand ourselves and our world. I believe our intention in these relationships “bends the arc toward justice.”
