The roles of nutrition, exercise physiology, and holistic health principles will be studied to develop a comprehensive understanding of how lifestyle choices influence athletic performance, recovery, and long-term health outcomes. Students will analyze nutritional needs, hydration, and advanced strategies such carbohydrate loading, timing of eating, and supplements. The risks and benefits of ergogenic agents, including pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and botanicals, will be studied. This course also provides a holistic foundation with the integration of wellness practices such as mindfulness and stress management. Students will develop the skills to design holistic sports nutrition strategies that maximize performance, enhance recovery, and promote long-term health and wellness for athletes at all levels.
Prepares students to sit the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) exam leading to the Certified Sports Nutritionist (CISSN) credential – http://www.sportsnutritionsociety.org/CISSN.html
Examine the influence of nutrition on the anatomy and physiology of exercise
Evaluate how carbohydrate, fats, proteins vitamins and minerals function in exercise
Explain the importance of water and develop effective hydration plans
Discuss the mechanism of action, performance benefits, and health concerns, and the safe use of common sports supplements
Develop a diet plan for a particular person engaging in a specific sport
Recognize and evaluate sports food, drinks, supplements and ergogenic aids and discuss their appropriate use
Develop a plan for nutrition and exercise for special populations
Analyze scholarly publications on the acute and chronic effects of sports nutrition and supplementation strategies on body composition, physical performance and metabolism
Explain position stands of the International Society of Sports Nutrition

Candidates must possess a baccalaureate degree or higher from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the US Department of Education. Candidates must submit official transcripts directly from the issuing institution along with one professional letter of recommendation. All applicants must be recommended for admission by the ACHS Admissions Committee.
