This course addresses important issues pertaining to sustainable urban development practices aimed at building and fostering sustainable, economically viable communities. The course investigates how multiple demographic, socio-cultural, political, economic, technological, and environmental forces intertwine to shape community economic development practices regionally, nationally, and internationally. Multiple models associated with various environments, resources, and constraints are presented and contrasted. Ultimately, the course invites learners to reflect upon strategies leading to the creation of socially, culturally, economically, and environmentally viable business communities positioned to grow in a sustainable and responsible manner.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of sustainability fundamentals and the
related economic opportunities, trends, and challenges associated with sustainable community building.
Identify steps required to navigate the regulatory environment.
Provide examples of how to engage with multiple levels of local, state, federal, and international entities to obtain buy-in and support of a blueprint for communities that reflects financial, environmental, and social sustainability.
Demonstrate ways to collaborate locally, nationally, and on a global scale to align seemingly competing agendas in pursuit of shared goals and objectives.
Compare and contrast elements and factors that create fissures in traditional communities with those that build economic strength and resiliency.
Produce and present a project that synthesizes the learning and includes a blueprint for a socially, culturally, fiscally, and environmentally viable community positioned to grow in a sustainable and responsible manner.
