Dissertation Seminar

Overview

This course directs students in the process and development of their dissertation research proposal. It is the first of three courses in planning, implementing and completing their dissertation. Students will choose their dissertation committee, develop and write their dissertation proposal and drafts of the first few chapters in close association with their dissertation chairperson. Additionally, if the proposed study is to work with human subjects the student will complete an Institutional Review Board (IRB) form and submit it for approval to the IRB committee. Upon approval of the IRB form and completion of the proposal the student will present this to their dissertation committee and upon approval of the proposal, the student will advance to doctoral candidacy. Prerequisites: Successful completion of all coursework and comprehensive examination.

In this course students will:

  • Complete the Dissertation Proposal and Approval Form
  • Develop the Dissertation Chapter One: Introduction
  • Develop the Dissertation Chapter Two: Literature Review

Learning Outcomes

  • Choose an appropriate dissertation committee;

  • Analyze research in a dissertation topic;

  • Develop a conceptual framework and hypothesis for a dissertation study;

  • Utilize the IRB approval process;

  • Create and submit a dissertation proposal for their research study plan.

Admissions Requirements:

Candidates must possess a baccalaureate degree or higher from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the US Department of Education. Candidates must submit official transcripts directly from the issuing institution along with one professional letter of recommendation. All applicants must be recommended for admission by the ACHS Admissions Committee.
