This course provides students with the foundational principles of the art and science of herbalism. Students will explore the historical use of herbs and methods to create key types of herbal preparations. Students will be immersed in foundational herbal materia medica learning the botanical profiles and therapeutic uses of important botanicals. This interactive course includes an herb kit which students use for hands-on practical lab assignments and discussions allowing them to interact with the herbs studied. This course supports students in building their knowledge base of herbal studies, interacting with their community of other herbal studies students, practice making simple herbal remedies, and administration strategies in herbalism.
Explain and discuss the foundation of herbal medicine and its history.
Identify what makes herbs work.
Create basic herbal preparations.
Recognize and confidently use sixteen common herbs, including borage, dandelion, chamomile, sage, horehound, and lavender.
Grow herbs organically, gather wild herbs ethically, dry, and store herbs.
Create herbal cosmetics.
Cook using herbs, including edible flowers, culinary herbs, and weeds.
Create and use herbal remedies for your family for optimal health.
Create and use herbal remedies for women, babies, and children, including natural remedies for common problems such as colic and diaper rash.
