Advanced Botanical Therapeutics and Research I

Overview

This doctoral-level course advances from botanical chemistry to therapeutic action, focusing on the pharmacology of botanical extracts. Students analyze the mechanisms by which botanical constituents exert therapeutic effects, evaluate safety and pharmacology, and assess benefit–risk profiles across therapeutic applications. The course integrates critical synthesis of pharmacognosy and clinical-use evidence with the study designs and safety frameworks that govern therapeutic botanicals. By integrating botanical pharmacology, safety, and research design, the course prepares doctoral students to evaluate and advance the science of botanical therapeutics.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze the pharmacological mechanisms by which botanical constituents and extracts exert therapeutic effects in order to evaluate their therapeutic potential.

  • Evaluate the safety and pharmacology of botanical extracts in order to characterize their benefit–risk profiles across therapeutic applications.

  • Critically synthesize pharmacognosy and clinical-use evidence for botanical therapeutics in order to evaluate the strength of evidence behind therapeutic claims and identify research gaps.

  • Evaluate the study designs used in botanical pharmacology research in order to determine the validity and usability of therapeutic evidence.

  • Integrate botanical pharmacology, safety, and research-design principles in order to formulate original research directions that advance the science of botanical therapeutics.
