DSCMH 601

Foundations of Integrative Mental Health and Well-Being

Overview

This course examines the biological mechanisms through which mental states and social contexts interact with physiological systems relevant to mind–body medicine. Emphasis is placed on understanding plausible biological pathways linking psychological processes with autonomic, immune, neural, and cellular functioning. Students explore stress physiology, distributed regulation across systems, neuroimmune signaling, gut–brain communication, and the biology of cellular aging.

The course prioritizes systems-level thinking, mechanistic literacy, and critical interpretation of evidence, preparing students to explain mind–body connections with scientific rigor and an appropriate recognition of the limitations of current evidence.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze key concepts and theories in integrative mental well-being and whole-person care, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of holistic mental health models (mind-body-spirit integration).

  • Evaluate major clinical mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, burnout, chronic stress) and their treatment within integrative models of care, assessing how conventional and complementary approaches can be combined.

  • Critically appraise evidence-based interventions—including contemplative, somatic, and lifestyle-based methods—used to support mental health, and synthesize research findings to inform practice.

  • Integrate principles of cultural humility and professional ethics into the design and delivery of integrative mental health interventions, ensuring practices are culturally responsive and ethically sound.

  • Design whole-person, integrative strategies for supporting individuals experiencing stress or mental health challenges, formulating comprehensive plans that incorporate psychological, biological, social, and lifestyle factors.
