The Science of Somatic and Mindfulness Therapies

Overview

The Science of Somatic and Mindfulness Therapies provides a rigorous, evidence-informed exploration of somatic and mindfulness-based therapies within the Doctorate of Integrative Mental Health, guiding students from foundational theory through applied integration and synthesis. Students examine the scientific mechanisms, historical development, and empirical evidence supporting leading mindfulness and somatic approaches while critically evaluating their strengths, limitations, and ethical considerations in trauma-informed and culturally responsive care.

This course emphasizes whole-person, integrative mental health frameworks and progressively develops competencies in assessment, adaptation, and treatment planning. Learning culminates in a capstone integrative therapeutic protocol that demonstrates doctoral-level synthesis, clinical reasoning, and professional communication aligned with contemporary integrative mental health practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Articulate key theoretical frameworks and mechanisms of action across somatic and mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches, demonstrating conceptual clarity in these domains.

  • Critically evaluate empirical research and methodologies related to embodied (somatic) and contemplative (mindfulness) modalities, demonstrating doctoral-level research literacy.

  • Conduct comparative analyses of somatic versus mindfulness-based approaches, integrating interdisciplinary evidence to identify their strengths, limitations, and complementary uses in mental health care.

  • Apply trauma-informed and culturally aware perspectives when analyzing case scenarios, organizational contexts, or systems-level situations, using appropriate conceptual models to ensure safe and inclusive practice.

  • Synthesize theoretical and empirical insights to develop an evidence-informed, integrative understanding of how somatic and mindfulness approaches can be effectively applied in the promotion of mental health and well-being.
