This undergraduate course explores traditional and modern integrative healing systems, tracing how different cultures understand health, illness, and the therapeutic use of plants. Students examine Appalachian and Southern folk healing traditions alongside the energetic frameworks of Western vitalism, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, learning how these systems classify the body, plants, and disease through holistic and energetic models, how cultural and historical context shapes each tradition, and how this inherited knowledge informs contemporary integrative and herbal practice.
By comparing traditional healing systems with modern integrative approaches, students develop an understanding of the philosophical foundations, cultural roots, and practical applications of plant-based healing while learning to engage these traditions both respectfully and critically.
