This doctoral-level course integrates botanical science with the critical appraisal of botanical therapeutics research, building on the foundations of Advanced Botanical Therapeutics and Research I. Students critically evaluate and synthesize the botanical therapeutics literature and apply pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, and botanical safety to evaluate the therapeutic mechanisms of botanicals. Students interpret the research designs and biostatistical approaches used in botanical pharmacology and clinical research, building a foundation for later research-design coursework. By contrasting mechanistic findings with clinical applications and exploring synergism within botanical formulations, the course prepares doctoral students to synthesize the literature and identify research gaps that frame original questions for future research.
Synthesize the botanical therapeutics literature in order to assess the strength of evidence behind therapeutic claims.
Apply pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, and botanical safety in order to evaluate the therapeutic mechanisms of botanical constituents and different types of botanical extracts.
Analyze the synergistic interactions among constituents within botanical formulations in order to evaluate their combined therapeutic mechanisms.
Contrast mechanistic findings with clinical applications in order to determine how botanical research translates to therapeutic use.
Interpret research designs and biostatistical approaches used in botanical pharmacology and clinical research in order to evaluate the validity and usability of therapeutic evidence.
Synthesize mechanistic and clinical evidence in order to identify research gaps that frame original questions for future research.
