What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to support overall wellness — physically, emotionally, and mentally. It’s a time-tested practice with roots in traditional Chinese medicine, Egyptian rituals, and other healing systems around the world.

Essential oils work through scent and skin absorption to help calm the mind, ease discomfort, and support natural healing.

At ACHS, aromatherapy is taught with a deep respect for traditional knowledge. Our programs emphasize safe, ethical use and sustainable sourcing, honoring the cultures and communities where these practices began.

The Value of Accreditation

ACHS is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). DEAC is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting agency and recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). This ensures that your aromatherapy education meets rigorous academic and industry standards — adding value to your credentials and advancing your ability to support others with confidence.

FAQs

How long does it take to become aromatherapist?

The time it takes to become an aromatherapist depends on the program you choose and your schedule. At ACHS, you can earn a certificate in as little as a year, while degree programs take longer. All programs are flexible and fully online, so you can pace your learning to fit your life. Some tracks also meet the education requirements for professional certification.

There are a variety of online aromatherapy training programs to choose from, but it’s important to look for programs that meet the standards set by professional organizations like the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) or the Alliance of International Aromatherapists (AIA). These programs typically include training in essential oil safety, techniques, and the science behind it.

You don’t need a degree to practice aromatherapy, but formal education is strongly recommended — especially if you want to work in a professional setting or qualify for national certification.

To become a Registered Aromatherapist (RA), start by completing a qualifying aromatherapy program that meets the educational standards set by the Aromatherapy Registration Council (ARC). After your training, you’ll apply to take the ARC exam, which tests your knowledge of essential oil safety, science, and professional ethics. Passing the exam earns you the RA credential, helping you demonstrate your expertise to clients and employers.
