Dr. Jimmy Godard, a faculty member at the American College of Healthcare Sciences (ACHS), recently embarked on an extraordinary trip to Ethiopia. His journey was more than just a trip; it was a profound experience of service, cultural immersion, and heartfelt connections. In the vibrant cities of Dire Dawa and Harar, Dr. Godard and his team provided life-changing aid to the communities.
Eyeglasses and Dental Care for the Community
The impact was immense: 587 prescription eyeglasses and 1100 readers were distributed among 1087 residents. Witnessing their smiles as clarity entered their lives was truly heartwarming. Dental care was another significant aspect of their mission. 234 individuals received much-needed relief, lightening the proverbial tooth fairy’s bag while offering immediate comfort and contributing to their long-term health.
Experiencing the Culture
However, Dr. Godard’s journey wasn’t just about providing essential services. It was a profound cultural immersion. Walking through the ancient city of Harar felt like a journey back in time. The bustling markets and the awe-inspiring sight of the Hyena Men were moments etched in memory. Dr. Godard even had the opportunity to get up close to incredible animals. The ancient paintings left him breathless, and the warmth and hospitality of the local people made Ethiopia feel like a second home.
What made this trip even more special was that Dr. Godard shared this experience with his children, creating enduring memories and instilling the values of service and compassion. Reflecting on this journey, Dr. Godard expressed profound gratitude for every shared moment and every smile. Ethiopia has left an indelible mark on his heart, encapsulating a blend of service, cultural richness, and genuine human connections.
