Key Takeaways

  • Danielle’s health crisis sparked a new purpose. After becoming seriously ill and struggling to find answers, she became her own advocate and took a research-driven approach to understanding her health.
  • Her experience inspired a career in integrative health. As her health improved, Danielle developed a deeper interest in nutrition, the gut microbiome, environmental factors, and other approaches to whole-person wellness.
  • Nutrition became a foundation of her work. Danielle became a certified nutrition professional and now focuses on supporting people with complex and chronic health challenges.
  • The ACHS Adult Scholarship helped make graduate education possible. After significant financial strain from her health crisis, the scholarship helped reduce the burden of pursuing her Master of Science in Holistic Nutrition.

Nine years ago, ACHS Master of Science in Holistic Nutrition student and ACHS Adult Scholarship recipient, Danielle Olen, moved from Boston to San Diego, hopeful and thriving. She was doing well working in real estate and building a stable life for herself and her child—until everything changed. She became seriously ill.

Almost overnight, Danielle’s days shifted from work responsibilities to doctor visits, from professional momentum to long lines at the pharmacy. Month after month passed without answers as her health continued to decline. As a single mother, giving up was never an option. Her child needed her, and she was determined to find a way back to health.

Becoming Her Own Advocate

Danielle OlenDriven by both desperation and hope, Danielle began researching relentlessly. She spent hours each day listening to online summits, attending webinars, reading books, and searching through PubMed. Over time, patterns emerged, leading her to suspect mold exposure. She sought out a mold-literate naturopathic doctor, who confirmed significant levels of mycotoxins in her body. That confirmation changed everything.

Danielle moved out of her apartment and committed fully to healing. She applied everything she was learning, completely overhauling her diet, discovering joy in cooking nourishing meals, improving her sleep, reducing stress, and incorporating gentle detox practices. Under her doctor’s guidance, she supported her immune system with targeted supplements, as well as carefully researched herbs and essential oils.

Healing Beyond Symptoms

As her health improved, her curiosity deepened. Danielle immersed herself in learning about the gut microbiome, the lymphatic system, environmental toxins, and increasingly advanced therapeutic approaches. Healing was no longer just about feeling better; it was about understanding why her body had broken down and how to restore it at the root level.

Eventually, her health was restored. However, returning to her old life was no longer an option.

The journey had changed her. With new awareness came a painful realization: how much unnecessary suffering exists and how many people are searching for answers without guidance. She knew then that her experience carried a responsibility to help others find healing, too.

A New Calling in Integrative Health: Nutrition as a Foundation for Healing

Through her own experience, Danielle learned that nutrition and lifestyle are the cornerstones of lasting health. Wanting to help others make these foundational changes, she became a certified nutrition professional and began consulting with clients. Danielle feels especially called to work with individuals facing complex and chronic health conditions and those navigating challenges similar to her own.

Danielle believes functional medicine offers one of the most effective approaches for chronic illness because it focuses on identifying and addressing root causes rather than managing symptoms. Her goal is to develop advanced skills in science-based, personalized nutrition therapy. Her graduate education at ACHS will allow her to refine her consulting abilities and meet the academic requirements to pursue advanced clinical credentials in nutrition and functional medicine. She will continue to expand her services and is currently focusing on supporting clients who have been affected by cancer.

Moving Forward With Purpose

Danielle’s health crisis depleted her financial resources, including her life savings and retirement funds. While she is grateful to have access to student loans that make her education possible, receiving the ACHS Adult Scholarship has played an essential role in easing the financial burden of rebuilding both her health and her career.

This work is her purpose. By sharing her story, Danielle hopes to convey not only her passion for nutrition and integrative medicine but also the depth of her commitment to service. Healing saved her life, and now, helping others heal is how she chooses to live it.
